All About Sprouting Seeds
All information about description and sprouting directions are from our supplier’s websites – Mumm’s and Sproutmaster. There are some excellent how to videos on the Internet to help you learn at a faster pace. I have enjoyed the videos posted at Sprout People or search yourself at YouTube.
We also have several seed packs from Mumm’s for sale including the sprouting starter kit. Please visit our Sprouting page for more information. There are other ‘sproutable seeds’ (nuts, grains, beans and seeds) such as chia seeds, wheat (hard winter), French Lentils, raw almonds, etc.
For sprouting equipment and accessories please visit our Sprouting & Accessory page (sprouters, mason jars, screen, sprouting bags, books, kelp fertilizer, 35% food-grade hydrogen peroxide, etc)
Many people like to use filtered water to rinse their sprouts. I typically leave a jar of water out on the countertop each evening and I use that water in my sprouting process. Letting the water sit out (uncovered allows the chlorine to vent off and the temperature to moderate a bit – instead of shocking the seeds with cold tap water). If you have a filter in your home so much the better but do let it adjust to room temperature before using.
Many people also like to add a small amount of 35% food-grade hydrogen peroxide to their rinse water to ensure that no mold grows and extra oxygen is being made available to the seeds.
When to start eating the sprouts? Some people suggest you can start to eat the sprouts when they are the length of the seed. Of course this means you are not getting the volume potential if you let the sprout grow longer.
Refrigerated sprouts store better when they are in a sealed container and not overly moist. It is best to let them drain well after their final rinse. They ‘should’ store for up to two weeks but the benefits of sprouts has a lot to do with freshness so it is best to eat them up sooner (7 days).

Sunflower – White Striped and Black Oil Unhulled (still has hard hull surrounding the seed)
Since these still have the hulls still on them then don’t work well in a jar method and it is recommended that you either grow them as a microgreen in soil or in a soilless sprouter like the Sproutmaster or on a Baby Blanket
Unhulled White Striped is Excellent for sprouting and growing greens, a much larger sprout than the black seed. Sprouts in 10 to 12 days, 3″ to 4″ green sprouts. The following amounts are for a 10-inch growing tray.
SOAK – Put 1-½ cup of seeds in a bowl. Cover Add 3-cups cool water and soak for 8 to 12 hours. Note – sunflower seeds float so you need to weigh them down in the water. If you have some kind of screen that will fit your bowl/container to keep your sunflower seeds submerged so they get well and thoroughly hydrated. Drain. Put into your sprouter (a jar will work for this portion of the process).
RINSE and DRAIN – for about a day or two you treat these shelled seeds as you would any other sprout. Try to keep these out of direct sunlight. Then after the seeds have a small root (about ¼ inch) you will prepare to transfer these awaking seeds over to your sprouter.
PREPARE SPROUTER – spread your soil out in your tray and thoroughly soak. If you are using a soilless medium like a Baby Blanket you should ensure this is also thoroughly soaked.
PLANT – spread your soaked seeds on your growing medium or in the sprouter of your choice. The seeds should crowd themselves – overlap to some degree but not like 3 – 4 deep. Seeds at this point want to believe that they are underground so it is good to put them in the dark again. You can do this by putting an inverted tray over top but ensure there is air able to get in so that it reduces the chances of mold.
WATERING – for the first couple of days just spray the sprouting seeds until the roots work themselves down into the soil. Now that you are growing in soil or a soilless medium you need to ensure that your bedding is moist but not drowning (too much water and there isn’t oxygen and healthy roots need oxygen – it also keeps down potential mold).
UNCOVER – after 3 – 4 days (and the sprouts are about 1 inch tall) you want to remove the covering and expose the sprouts to direct sunlight (or at least a fairly sunny area). You should expect to do more watering since the sun will dry out the medium faster.
ENJOY – When the sprouts are 2-3 inches tall you can start to harvest them. Just cut off as much as you wish to use. If you wish to store them you can put the tray into the fridge and that will slow down the growth or you can cut the lot and store the cut sprouts in the refrigerator.
Sunflower – Hulled (Hulls removed)
Hulled sunflower seeds are quite often just soaked and then eaten (much like nuts and hulled buckwheat – groats).
Easy Sprouting Directions (Jar Method):
SOAK – Put ½ cup or more sunflower seeds in a wide mouth jar (or bowl). Cover with mesh and secure with rubber band (if you are intending to sprout them). Add water, swirl, and drain – do this several times since hulled sunflowers tend to be dustier than unhulled seeds. Add 2-cups cool water and soak for 30 – 60 minutes. Drain. (You can actually start to eat the soaked sunflowers at this point).
RINSE – Twice a day, refill jar with cool water, swirl, and drain. Invert jar and prop at an angle in a sink or bowl. You can actually start to eat these as soon as they are soaked and rinsed a few times.
ENJOY – Best at 24 or 48 hours. Refrigerate to store.
Some people will take the soaked sunflower seeds and then dehydrate them so they get the crunchiness of a seed back but the nutritional benefits of sprouting. Flavourings (tamari, salt, curry, etc) can be added before dehydration. This produces a healthier snack than chips or store bought nuts.
Mung Bean
Grow the very popular Chinese bean sprouts, or use for short sprouts. Should be grown in the dark to prevent bitterness.
Certified Fair Trade
SPECIAL SPROUTING DIRECTIONS
Grow mung bean sprouts in the dark –
light causes bitterness.
Soak – Put 3 – 5 Tbsp seed in a wide mouth jar. Cover with mesh + secure with a rubber band. Add water, swirl + drain. Add 1-cup warm (30C) water & soak for 4 – 8 hrs. Drain.
Rinse – 2 to 4 times a day, refill jar with cool water, swirl + drain. Invert jar and prop at an angle in a bowl that you place with no direct sunlight.
Enjoy – Ready to eat in 2 to 5 days. Refrigerate to store.
Or grow in a basket, colander, or tray sprouter for long straight sprouts. Mung bean sprouts do best with lots of rinsing – 3 to 4 times a day if possible.
Oats, Hulless
This is a type of barley that grows without hulls. It can be ground for flour or sprouted as short sprouts.
It can be used in soups, like pot barley. It will also produce acceptable, but not great, barley grass. Barley with hulls is best for growing barley grass.

Peanuts – Raw shelled peanuts for sprouting
As with most nuts – soaking and starting the sprouting process helps with digestibility and an increase in nutrients.
Easy Sprouting Directions (Jar Method):
SOAK – Put ¼ cup seed in a wide mouth jar. Cover with mesh and secure with rubber band. Add water, swirl, and drain. Add 1-cup cool water and soak for 4 – 12 hours. Drain and rinse well.
RINSE – Twice a day, refill jar with cool water, swirl, and drain. Invert jar and prop at an angle in a sink or bowl. You can actually start to eat these as soon as they are soaked and rinsed around 3 times.
The peanuts will start a small bump at the pointed end. You don’t need to have a root start (in fact it starts to degrade the taste a bit the more root that grows).
ENJOY – Best at 24 or 48 hours. Refrigerate to store.

ENJOY – Ready in 2 to 4 days. Refrigerate to store.
Buckwheat (hulls on)
A mild and tasty 10-day sprout. Grows great in SproutMaster trays for mild lettuce-like cuttings.
There is some information indicating that buckwheat shoots in large quantities may cause a reversible photosensitization that includes uncomfortable symptoms. We are currently recommending moderate consumption of buckwheat shoots, and complete avoidance if any light sensitivity occurs.
A short article by Gilles Arbour that contains further detailed information, discoverer of this problem, is available at http://www.gillesarbour.com/buckwheat.php.
Easy Sprouting Directions:
SOAK – Rinse the seed. Soak seed in water for 4 – 8 hrs. Drain. Spread 2 or 3 layers deep in the bottom of a sprouting tray
RINSE – Twice a day, rinse or spray mist thoroughly. Keep covered; condensation formed helps the hulls fall off. For greener leaves, cover with plastic bag & expose to bright indirect light for the last day or two
ENJOY – Ready to eat in 10 to 12 days.
